Recently finishing Jiro Dreams of Sushi had me on the lookout for all things fish these past few days. It seems that I am not alone in the love of these swimming beauties, especially when it comes to Japanese artist Risuke Kukahori. Painting three-dimensional goldfish in individual layers of overlapping paint and resin, you can watch things slowly come to life in the video above and on his site.
Absolutely wonderful attention to detail, and the optical illusion created by the layers of resin make these both a sculptural and paint phenomenon. Enjoy!

The Event of a Thread, Stunning Interactive Installation by Ann Hamilton
Its a simple concept. A single thread, connected to something greater. When you add movement, and a very emotive soundtrack, it becomes something more. This work by Ann Hamilton, which took place just a few days ago, is a wonderful case of interactive art that I would love to see.
India.
I’ve been hearing about this nation my entire life, but recently had the chance to experience it this past month. Imagine my surprise upon arrival, when expecting the classic dosas and dahl, I was instead met with India’s first biennale.
My sample of photos from day one is above, but I have to say congratulations to everyone who was a part of making these projects possible. Pulling a show together at any time is difficult, but Cochi had is own special set of obstacles (read more here). I can’t wait to see how the rest of the exhibition goes!

Great setup everyone! It was great to see you there
If you were at the NGA lately you were probably there to see the George Bellows exhibit (which I will already tell you was one of the best shows of 2012 in DC). NGA does almost everything well, and the last few photography shows I’ve seen there have been no exception (Street Photography and the Harry Callahan centennial).
The Serial Portrait: Photography and Identity in the Last One Hundred Years looks like it will be another great exhibit and the brief write-up from NGA describes it so succinctly, I’m giving to to you straight:
“Since the introduction of photography in 1839, portraiture has been one of the most widely practiced forms of the medium. Starting in the early 20th century, however, some photographers began to question whether a single image could adequately capture the complexity of an individual. Arranged both chronologically and thematically, the exhibition features 153 works by 20 artists who photographed the same subjects—primarily friends, family, and themselves–over the course of days, months, or years to create some of the most provocative and revealing portraits of the past 100 years.”
Voila!
Exhibit runs through December 31, in the West Building, Ground Floor, National Gallery of Art.
Listen- this recording is made with a wooden ball, a xylophone, and gravity. That is all.

Its been a busy few days for art in the District! The latest news has it that JR is in town- next time you amble down 14th street, take a look at the new installation at T & 14th. Most well known for his larger scale pieces, this is a relatively small work that was put up yesterday.

A warm welcome to the latest kid on the scene: Art.sy! After a few years of private testing, this art networking software and collective went live to the general public yesterday. Bringing to the art world what sites like Pandora have brought to music, Art.sy makes recommendations as to what artists and styles you may be intersted in.
